World Report of Fighting Games

11 01 2008

Fighting games are no longer restricted geographically. Japan has in the past years been very receptive of talented players outside Japan. Many international events were held and global players invited to participate in these events.

Super Battle Opera SBO Tougeki is one such prime example. In its 5th year now, Tougeki boasts the most number of international participants to date. Even it’s official magazine SBO Spirits 闘劇魂 published by enterbrain now allocates full page features to cover the international scene.

Australia is very fortunate to be one of the few countries that Tougeki recognize as worthy of invitation in various games such as Tekken, Virtual Fighter and Street Fighter. Here’s hoping the players continue to prove themselves at the highest level.

In addition to Australia, the article featured the USA West Coast, USA East Coast and France. I had the pleasure of meeting all the players from these regions and competing against them at the highest level when in Japan during SBO5 last August. That’s what’s gooooood!

OHN5 DVD… the making of

9 12 2006

DVDs are nice to watch but ridiculous to make. Following OHN5’s huge success, a DVD was to be produced so that this event is captured in all its glory. TSC shouldered the responsibilty of this mammoth task as he was in charge of video editing in Sydney. No one batted an eyelid and just assumed that it will delivered at the then promised ETA of end August.

August came and passed. No DVD in sight. I met up with Daine and offered my help. Sure enough, he was struggling as this is an unbelivable task for 1 person alone. Most of the time, a team will work on different aspects of a DVD and then combine their efforts to produce the final product. I gladly volunteered to do the menus and cover/disc art for the DVD.

For the DVD to make it to your doorstep, there are 18 steps to go through. Record video, capture on tape, transfer from tape to computer, edit footage, add subtitles, encode edited footage, create menus, compile DVD, shrink to size, burn to disc, verify content, create cover art, print cover art, cut to size, design disc art, print disc art onto discs and package it all.

Daine had tons of troubles with the encoded videos as they turned out jerky, blocky and lagging when characters were moving around. All the time and efforts spent the past 3 months going down the drain. We couldn’t pinpoint at which stage of the encoding the error occured as I’m not familiar with Macintoshs and Daine was clueless as usual :P After throwing in the towel, Daine gave the job to me to see whether doing it on PCs will yield better results.

It was quite a bitch going the DIY route as you had to source for the empty media, empty cases and equipment yourself. 1 month passed and I’m all done but waiting for the missing parts that were promised, the documentary and OHN5 official photos, before actively going into the production stage.

So here I am at 5am, being kept awake by the whirring of the DVD burner and writing this blog post. I hope everyone enjoys the DVD. It’s good to go. The jinx is broken.

The move to GGS, from hell to hell

20 09 2006

The initial plan to use the 2nd floor of MCH all went up in smoke with the fallout between MCH owners and cabinet owner TSC. bluey, Tian, Jack, TSC and I wasted 2 whole days clearing the junk upstairs only to discover it was time to move on. We swept, mopped, dusted, lifted, hammered, carried, shoved, destroyed, dismantled, smelt, cleaned, removed all for nothing.

A new location was secured but arcade cabinets don’t magically move themselves. Shrouded in secrecy we had no choice but to keep mum about our move. It felt like OHN5 ALL OVER AGAIN. The sweat, the pain, the frustration at things not working, plans not working according to ….er… plan. Jack was designated truck driver and he with a few others already started the move. When Akira and I arrived at the new location, the boys there already did all the work. Orion, Kevin, Jack, bluey and TSC were already having a lunch break when we got there. The image of the remaining cabinet will continue to haunt all of us as we tried unsuccessfully to move it upstairs through a narrow walkway to GGS. This is the beast in question:

This mini pic does no justice to its real life mammoth size and awkward angles which it presents to its handlers. I had the cheek to suggest we should just force it up the stairs and Jack echoed my views. Looks like us Chinese people have no brains at all. The only way this fridge is going upstairs is in pieces, that’s when we decided to pry it open in one of the busiest street in Sydney city. We got numerous “Are you jihading?” looks but the frustration got to us so much that we couldn’t be bothered.

The prying didn’t progress much as the structure of the cabinet, coupled with copies amount of wiring and dangerous current of the 2 monitors inside, prevented any hardcore attempts at dismantling. In addition, the pedestrian flow and oncoming traffic were factors in persuading us to find a more suitable place with better tools to break this mofo down. In the end, we headed to Daine’s place and laid it out in his garage. This is where the famous hospitality of Sydney comes into play. With a Melbourne guest who can’t take hints that he’s extra baggage, Sydney players got their point across by dumping him into the back of a truck.

Arriving at TSC’s home for the 1st time, I was overwhelmed OMG this guy is packing heat, he lives in a 3 storey mansion with beautiful maidens as servants. sneek and TSC proceeded to bust up the Versus City with the rest of us as assistants, and we were rushing to meet the deadline that was promised to the Sydney 3rd Strike community. Eventually, this project was abandoned because despite removing the heaviest items inside the cabinet (the 2 CRT monitors), it still weighed a ton and its internal wiring embedded too deep and complex for re-attachment. Personally, I attribute this to the gayness Akira brought over from Melbourne.

Akira, after placing 2nd in the past National tournament 2 months ago, decided that Sydney was easy to pick on and came up again to play us. I was unfortunately chosen to house this guy, and he deprived me of my sleep night after night discussing about various 3S matchups. Thanks for visiting homo.

The Nationals are here again

7 07 2006

Ozhadou Nationals 5 was awesome. As a player and as a volunteer at this year’s Ozhadou Nationals, I was heavily involved in the preparation and execution of the event. However the work I did was minimal compared to what the real organisers and moderators were doing in the background. Months before July 2006 discussions were already in place in terms of pre-registering, securing the venue, obtaining clearance, transportation of cabinets, inviting international guests among hundreds of other issues.

There were literally hundreds of issues that needed to be addressed. Although the organisers were armed with 4 years of experience, quite often unforeseen circumstances bitch us into doing something undesired. I remember meeting Ziggy at the UTS foyer and feeling his frustration because he was inspecting an alternate venue as the original Gallery Function was denied.

3rd Strike was my main game so naturally there’s a bias to make it as smooth and successful as possible. TSC was the main driving force in making H2H arcade cabinets available for 3rd Strike, and he had a lot of help from the Sydney 3S community who selflessly contributed in their own way to make OHN5 the biggest ever national. The truck driving, the tedious transporting of those 200kg monster cabinets down/up stairs, poster making/distributing, wiring up the internals, moving monster stereos, installing brand new sanwa sticks and buttons, etc…

I can reveal here that after the disappointing news that Empire guests backed out, OHN5 was nearly graced by one of Japan’s 3S gods. Travelling together with him will be one of the influential figures in SBO, but alas this duo eventually didn’t fly as the timeframe given to them was just too sudden. If only Empire had the courtesy and informed us earlier of their intentions. I took up anger management classes because of this.

The pre-OHN5 trip to Melbourne was not a coincidence. 1 week prior to the big event, this trip was planned to further persuade the bulk of Melbourne players still hesitating to come up to Sydney and have a great time. It was neither a ploy to gleam some tactics, nor a chance to embarrass ourselves. Without Adelaide, Melbourne or Queensland guests, OHN5 is nothing. We set out with that inter-state mindset and hoped to influence others into thinking that travelling for this event alone was worth it.

Day -2 (Wed)
Haichii arrived early and I housed him yet again. As the rest of the QLD contingent arrived later on Fri, Hai was being cheap and wanted a free place to stay. That’s just his excuse for coming early, I bet he’s here to sniff out the competition and get his rusty 3S skills up to scratch. Hai alternated between playing Tekken and 3rd Strike and he eventually got Best Capcom Player (BCP) in OHN5, which goes to show being kiasu paid off! That also made him the most hated person among Sydney’s Marvel community as he took away the prize Naomi MvC2 board, which was exactly what the Sydney Marvel players were starved of.

Day -1 (Thu)
The final ranbat was held tonight and Aurik managed to make it. We held a 2 on 2 casual tourny and he just beasted it to the finals with TSC doing zilch. My team got a lucky streak and went to the finals too, but I got soundly KOed by his Yun. His Yun is relentless and knows the Dudley match-up very well, got peaced out pretty bad :(

Day 0 (Fri)
Arrived late evening to the OHN5 venue and found that 2 of the H2H cabinets were already moved thanks to the work of the Melb and Ozhadou team. The whole place was basically empty sans those cabinets and a few extension cords. With under 12 hours before going live we were still mucking around because we didn’t have equipment available and the delay in shipping fucked us up. So it’s left to tomorrow, the actual tourny day itself to set up and make the cabinets operational, layout the furniture, setup audio/video devices and tend to players’ requests. BIG day ahead.

Day 1 (Sat)
Got about 4 hours of sleep and it’s back to the venue at 8am, and some of the crew was already there. As I was a miscellaneous guy I just chipped in wherever help was needed. I remembered carrying TVs and console stuff from outside the building for the BYO section, as well as transporting 6 cabinets which arrived via a truck( 1 day late). It couldn’t get into the building as it was a Saturday, little things like these shit me to no end :x It was quite comical as a bunch of us tried to figure out ways to open the gate so that the driver can enter the carpark. The rest of the crew was out doing emergency runs to the electronic store Jaycar to purchase last minute components so that people can play on the arcade cabinets. The logistics involved was crazy, unforeseen circumstances are bitches.

Truly indebted to William, the technician who came all the way from Melbourne just to help us out with the equipment. Without him those arcade cabinets are just huge plastic boxes. As Daine mentioned, William went into beast mode and MADE cables on the spot, as he knows the intricate components of an Astro/Versus. I watched him solder some electronic components just bought from Jaycar minutes ago ….. then he goes “TA DAA! Done.” “Need any help?” “No, it’s OK.” :o

Players started filtering in and the anxiety kept increasing as we were still working out kinks as we go along. Of course everyone else was oblivious to the organisers’ work but that was the nature of the job, it stinks. Approaching the start of the 3S pools things took a turn for the better, cabinets were enabled and players and organisers alike started to ease up in preparation for the real tournament. Also heard of news that Hong might not make it to OHN5 due to personal reasons, a big downer as he’s expected to feature in at least top 3 in 3S.

Start of Pools
I was grouped together with Justin, Benson and Aurik. All 3 capable of beating me soundly so I was a tad worried. One way I avoided this was to not even look at the brackets and just take it a match at a time. Luck was on my side and I made it through to the Final 8 by faking self belief. Watching the rest of the pools and supporting fellow Sydney players was so enjoyable. TimZ versus Lok was a nail biter, as was IXL’s frustration scream after beating Kechu. Many many highlights worthy of mentioning and of course captured in the DVD that’s about to be released.

Final 8
I enjoyed contributing to the event that was Final 8 as it was such a spectacle to watch. Paul beasting all the way and Chester providing drama as well as Joey. All 8 made this event so special and I reckon this is what OHN is about, the audience, players and atmosphere. Our international guests missed out big time.

Day 2 (Sun)
I slept like a log till noon before heading to UTS with emotions still on a high from yesterday. Had a great match with ToXY in ST, dogged Daine with counter character and finished higher than unexpected. ST is a funny game. In the team tournament my two teammates Jack and Joey were cleaning house till the finals where they succumbed to Lok, Akira and Aurik. Aurik finished me off neatly earning them those nice figurine trophies, I’m a sad man :(

Highlight of the day still has to be the 5 on 5 exhibition with Melbourne. Pride was at stake, no matter how less there is to go around. Started off terribly with a loss to Kevin, but the teams went back and forth till Paul steps up and kills us all. Where’s that ninja I hired? It was another enjoyable event which added to the overall competitive but friendly spirit which Australian players encompass.

Ozhadou Nationals 5 rocked.

Returning the favour

25 06 2006

Many non-Sydney players have been visiting us for countless times, so it was appropriate we returned the favour. A number of us decided to make a trip down to Melbourne prior to Ozhadou Nationals 5, as well as record some real-life footage for the documentary we have been preparing for the OHN5 DVD. Here’s the log I wrote:

Day 1 (Thurs)

Flight/bus travel
Thursday finally arrived and I was really looking forward to fly to Melbourne. I took the bus last time and it was horrid, but flying wasn’t any better. Daine and Jack decided to splurge on a taxi to the airport while I went alone on a bus as I’m tight.

Arrived at the airport and went to the Quantas terminal (what a noob). That was just an omen of things to come. Upon check-in I was “bomb-checked” by security hahahaha and arrived late to find Jack blasting Daine for throwing away food he just ordered. Apparently Daine took 2 bites and decided it didnt suit his taste so he just junked it Shocked What a princess …… Later during the trip Daine revealed he too was bomb-checked, so apparently the criteria for being singled out by security is tall and hunky guys.

The flight itself was nothing special except for the fact that the 2 homos I am travelling with wanted either the window or aisle seat, leaving the middle one for my fat ass and thighs. Great. Before takeoff the plane actually moved while everyone was still not secured to seats. I love dodgy airlines. Towards descend Jack hallucinated that a cute chick in the back row was checking him out when in fact she was looking at his weird glasses.

Touchdown to crappy Melbourne weather and the funnies start soon enough. We bought bus tickets to the city and handed one to Daine while he waited for checked-in baggage. When it was time to go, Daine couldn’t find it and went into panic mode. Rest of the passengers were either pissed off or trying hard not to laugh. Jack and I faked concern but it was all too funny. It was unfortunate that the ticket was found and the drama ended but we couldnt stop laughing throughout the bus trip.

Bluehouse
Dropped our stuff off at the hotel and went straight to Russell St to have casuals. Met Akira, Lok, Alex, Hong and Toxy for the 1st time and caught up with old faces like Ho, Kechu, Mav, GSM, Juris and Lee (I hope I didnt miss any names) Hong’s Dudley was just mad and went on win streaks always. He has more control than me and of course technical execution and mixup variation. I am inspired by his dudley play as it is much more polished and complete. Time to relearn this game! This was just the 1st day of casuals and we have already discovered how big a gap there is between us two states. Juris’s turbo Dudley is equally crazy where he just goes berzerk mode and hound you with offence from the start.

Night
Dinner time and we went to a place called QV which I guess is the equalivant of Sydney’s QVB and had a meal while discovering that Akira is a joker and full of technical knowledge. Some of the Melb guys call him “Textbook” which stems from him studying frame data and analysing matchups accordingly. Back to night casuals, Daine was approached by a druggie ROFL and asked whether he was “Shane”. Wearing a leather jacket, leather shoes with slicked-back hair and looking suave, I too would be tempted to ask him “Hey mate, u know Shane?”

At the end of the day, Daine decided to interview Jack and me so he should have some video footage about our honest opinions about why Melb 3S > Syd 3S. Jack was apparently so brain-fucked by playing Melb players that he did random stuff like sleep for 1 hour and then suddenly jump up from his sleep and asked questions such as “Why did I do this on that instead of this?” Then went silent again. The day ended even worse for my 2 roommates as I went into darth vader mode, apparently when I fell asleep I snored so loud that I could have brought the whole building down. Jack has kindly informed me that he recorded this beastly noise into the phone that I bought him so that he can post it in the forums.

Day 2 (Fri)

Noon/Bluehouse
I woke up to find 2 grumpy old men who gave me killer stares like I have just denied them a whole night sleep or something. Australia went through to second round and these 2 guys were unhappy about being disturbed by neighbours celebrating goals at 5am. 2nd day of casuals were pretty much the same, finally met El-Renmanzuo after missing 2 attempts. Third time lucky. eks appeared and was doing well in casuals taking down many names and getting win streaks. Then Paul showed up and proved he’s not hype at all. He really is Australia’s best 3S player at the moment with his Akuma gameplay. Kevin might disagree but its for them to fight it out. If this year’s SBO team was Hong/Monky/Kechu/Oriku Australia really has a fighting chance to qualify for final 32. Daine gave an honest opinion based on all the foreign players he saw during Tougeki that Paul is best amongst them. Paul reminds me of the jap Akumas I see on vids and when I play him I am constantly backpeddling and blocking, couldn’t do jack shit.

Night
Jack and I left early hoping to catch more sleep as we had to check out early on Sat morning. Daine being the arcade officer he is, prefers to not be a team player and stayed on for more casuals. We just dogged him and headed back as we refuse to pay for an extra day of accomodation. In the end, our boss decided to graciously pay the majority of the room extension fee due to him having to deal with 2 scheming Chinese roommates. Another day passed and reflection at night in our shitty budget room. We talked about hiring ninjas for PaulT during OHN5 to increase Sydney’s chances, and yet another round of randomness from Jack, for example humping Daine’s bed and mine :o

Day 3 (Sat)

Noon
Jack left early followed by Daine then me. Jack was determined to adapt to Melb style and I reckon he did over the course of the whole trip better than Daine or me. We had casuals up till tournament time where eks was handling himself pretty well and ppl then start turning up.

Tourny
The tournament was so stress. 21 guys is considered a very low turnout for them. 21! We had live feed on the players’ faces in addition to direct feed from the cabinets. That place was so packed and the atmosphere is electric. I think Jack is doing the brackets up and will post them up soon. More highlights in the post tourny section I think.

Night
Dinner was an unforgetable dining experience. Szechuuuuuuuuan SIZZLE HOT JIZZNESS. I just realised that when they put 2 chillis on the menu they meant 200 chillis. I could take spicy food and that stuff just burnt my tongue out. Jack actually ordered a noodle soup and when it came it looked like someone poured chilli oil onto chilli flakes onto grinded raw chilli with red coloured noodles (should’ve taken a pic). Lok was struggling too as he ordered the same stuff. Sorry to wiggy and Alex who are not into Chinese food but gracious enough to tag along. Akira revealed the food was different from before as the restaurant just changed ownership so it was really bad luck for us. As it was after the tournament and Sydney guys did piss poor in it we kept getting taunted, mainly by Akira (all in good fun). Jack was the main target as Akira described his Genei-jin Yun as 3 yr old Genei-jin hahahhaha which was true to a certain extent. Many new quotes came from that dinner, I’m sure Kechu will change his signature soon.

Overnight/Flight
We went back to Bluehouse and had a best of 5 with Melbourne guys versus Sydney guys as Kevin had to leave early and the last chance to play with them before us flying back. It was great fun as there was no tourny pressure, which was followed by a 3on3 random team tournament where I was grouped with Hong and Akira hohoho …… Daine and I decided to leave early to pack up and shower (sorry Hong!) while Jack stayed and duke it out with Hong. Daine decided to start filming again and get final thoughts on the entire trip. Finally it was time to leave Melbourne with Alex driving us to the Avalon airport and we had a blast during that short drive discussing about random topics and how the Melbourne scene has turned around, came back from the dead and now superseded Sydney’s scene in both standard of play and overall humbleness and players’ attitudes.

Prior to flying Daine tried using an coin-operated internet kiosk and the sweetest thing happened. It ate his damn coin. How do you feel now, huh Mr. McD? Hahahahaha what sweet irony please fix your coin slots at MCH. Flight back was boring, discussed about the whole trip and how much we have learnt and when we got to the airport I opted to leave by bus but realised they dont operate on Sundays. Jack and Daine actually called to check on me to make sure I got out and they were going to turn back to fetch me on their taxi when I mentioned there was no bus. No sooner had I hang up the bus showed up and I couldnt be bothered calling them back. Jack then called again and got pissed because the taxi driver made an illegal u-turn ROFL. This whole trip was ridiculously eventful.

Melbourne was an eye opener, thanks for hospitality! See you in a week’s time, we will try to return the favour.

Kevin spared a few moments from a working trip to play 3rd Strike with us at MCH. His Urien is very technical and took everyone by surprise with his charge partioning and buffering. His visit concide with the stupendous news from TSC while he’s in Japan that Australia obtained a automatic spot for next year’s Tougeki SBO 3rd Strike.

Hope you had a great time, Kevin.

Euphoria of Super Battle Opera

24 05 2006

SBO 2006. The year when Australians finally decided to get off their bums and send a team of representatives to compete in this prestigious event held in Japan for fighting gamers.

Our team comprised of Aurik (oriku), Daine(TSC) and Garland(pK). Every man and his dog were rooting for this trio to do well in the last chance qualifiers. Thinking back, we were blessed to be given this chance to compete on an international level. If not for the vision of Daine in reviving the Sydney 3rd Strike scene no one could have imagined that we would have a team at Tougeki.

Although they didn’t win the remaining spot for the 32 team bracket in the finals, we still treated them as heroes and applauded them for their efforts. They managed to play many of the international and Japan players and became the envy of their peers back home in Australia. Many of the international players are currently in the same situation as us, to catch up to the Japanese level of play, as well as enjoy the social aspect among fellow enthusiasts.

The best news was yet to come ….. Daine managed to secure an automatic spot for Australia in next year’s tournament. AUSTRALIA HAS A SPOT. Pigs started flying and cab drivers required driving licences. Finally we have something to work towards.
